With a Whoo! Account ($12/month), you have the option of using your own custom domain instead of username.carbonmade.com. Not only do you get up to 50 projects, 500 hi-resolution images, and 10 videos, but you can also display your portfolio at www.whateveryouwant.com. For example, Dave Gorum uses www.davegorum.com to display his Carbonmade portfolio.
The process is simple:
Register / Set Up Your Custom Domain
- You’ll need to purchase a custom domain from an ICANN accredited registrar if you don’t already have one. More details on that below.
- Log in to your domain registrar’s account. Create a CNAME record pointing your domain (e.g. www.davegorum.com) to your username.carbonmade.com.
- You may also want to create a second CNAME record without the www. (eg. davegorum.com) to point to username.carbonmade.com so both davegorum.com and www.davegorum.com display your portfolio.
- E-mail us your domain name and Carbonmade URL.
It can take up to 48 hours for your custom domain to sync with your username.carbonmade.com. This isn’t a restriction on our part, but just how long the Internet takes to update everyone on the new URL. If it’s not still working after 48 hours, please contact your domain registrar to double-check that you set it up correctly.
Domain Registrars
There are a ton of domain registrars out there with varying prices of $9.99/year to $14.99/year. A simple search on Google will have your head spinning with choices. The big names, though, are GoDaddy and Network Solutions. Pick either of those and you should be happy enough.
GoDaddy
- Log in to your account at www.godaddy.com.
- Open the Domains tab. Select My Domain Names.
- Click the domain you want to use with Carbonmade.
- Click Total DNS Control And MX Records in the box entitled Total DNS Control.
- Click Add New CNAME Records.
- Input the following:
- Enter an Alias Name: www (or subdomain.yourdomain.com)
- Points to Hostname: carbonmade.com
- Click OK. You can now review the results.
Network Solutions
- Log in to your account at www.networksolutions.com.
- In the Account Manager, click Manage Domains.
- Select the domain name you’re using. Click Edit DNS.
- Click Advanced DNS Manager > Manage DNS Records.
- Edit your A records and remove @name and *. You'll also need to remove WWW if you’re planning to use a subdomain.yourdomain.com for your portfolio.
- Click Host Aliases > Add/Edit after returning to Advanced DNS Manager.
- Input the following:
- Alias: www. (or subdomain.yourdomain.com)
- Other Host: carbonmade.com
- Click Continue.
